Let’s Look at the “Modern” Office
Does The Modern Office Set-Up Work?
RUSSO’s New Orleans Office is located in a five story building in the central business district. Most of the building is comprised of shared space entrepreneurial start-ups and satellite offices of other bigger businesses — just like ours. Unlike a lot of other traditional office set-ups, this communal space is different. It breaks from tradition and just has an energy unlike any other office building we’ve ever visited. But here’s the thing: This type of work set-up is becoming more and more common across various industries.
The now legendary companies of giant tech innovators scattered across Silicon Valley quickly became the archetype for collaborative, “fun” workspaces. The world saw nerdy computer programmers playing midday Ping-Pong and web developers riding around on scooters and immediately started following their lead. Almost overnight, it became about creating a collaborative workspace and infusing all aspects of the “job” with excitement and a little bit of leisure. Companies started to value having relaxed, happy employees because it reflected well on productivity and the image of the company at large.
From that same movement of corporate fun environments, came the shared, entrepreneurial office spaces of today. Buildings like The IP Building in which RUSSO’s New Orleans office is housed can be found in metropolitan cities around the world. Here, the goal is to invite professionals from different industries to work alongside one another – creating opportunities for cross-industry development and new business ventures. The vibes are relaxed and the dress code is typically unenforceable.
Programs like LaunchPad in our building were founded to get freelancers and solo entrepreneurs out of the house and into an office environment. It’s a brilliant idea because humans are naturally social and more inclined to work when they’re actually in a “work setting.” This isn’t to say that working at home it’s ineffective. It’s just that this type of office innovation is the wave of the future.
Corporate culture works from the inside out, so if your people are relaxed, sociable, and enjoying themselves at work, that will radiate through your brand. And people will notice.
