Brand Builders Part 11: Do You Model Masters?
Is Your Brand Aware?
You know, those companies, right? The ones that are really good at what they do. I mean, they’re at the top of their game. Maybe they’re in your industry, maybe they’re in another industry. They’re probably not in your town, because you don’t like any of the competition in your town, but they could be across the country. They could even be in a different country. But they’re the masters. They’re like the Van Goghs the Picassos the Monets. You just feel like they know what they’re doing, and they’re doing it right all the time. They own the market share, they dominate the business, and you look at them, and you think, “Oh, they know what they’re doing.” Okay, so pay attention. Model their behavior.
Now, I am not saying you should copy them. I am not saying you should do exactly what they’re doing. I am definitely not saying you should look or sound anything like them. What I am saying is, when you can model the Masters, you’re keeping an eye on what they’re doing, you’re watching them. Especially the people who are doing a really great job and in an entirely different industry, but you think “I like their outcome. I like how they work.” And so pay attention.
You need to do a few things to be able to really model the masters, but one of the biggest things you have to do is identify who they are, really know who they are and then follow them. You know, subscribe to their blogs, follow them on social media, pay attention to what they’re doing. There are a few other tips that we’re going to talk about in another video with regards to having a listening station, but ultimately, what you want is to pick your head up out of your foxhole and look around. Be aware of what’s happening outside of your business, to companies outside of your industry, that really figured out how to do it right. This way, you’re going to be able to model their behavior, and when you see that they’ve post a certain thing on social media and it does well, what’s your version of that thing?
When you see they make some changes to their website, it seems to really work in the right direction, what’s your version of that thing? Pay attention to what they’re doing. Now, here’s the thing, other people are Modeling the Masters too, which means if you’re not paying attention to your competition, and they start copying you, you’ve got to figure out how to leapfrog ahead of them. Don’t stay stagnant. Just because they’ve caught up to you, don’t let them pass you. Push on the gas a little bit. You take that leap forward. That’s how you’re going to build your brand.
