7 WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR BRAND IN 2020: 1st – Target Audience
Target Audience
Your products and services are not for everyone. If you approach your marketing strategy with the intention of reaching ‘everyone’, then you will actually connect with ‘no one’.
Map out the demographics and psychographics of your target audiences (you can have more than one – primary, secondary, tertiary – but not 10) to truly define who your target audience needs to be. The more you know about them, what their likes/dislikes are, as well as their fears and needs, the better chance you have of finding commonalities and ways to connect with them.
Demographics: Go through the exercise of actually writing down the demographics for each of your target audiences. The factors to list are geography, age, income, marital status, gender, and education. Paint a picture with these tangibles to describe your perfect target customer.
Psychographics: Now go through the exercise with these intangibles. What are their likes, dislikes, perceptions, wants, needs, fears, hopes, and dreams? List everything that you can about what they think about you, what you want them to think, and what they think of your competition.
There is a finite number of people that will fit into your target audience. And there are multiple companies also working to reach those same people. But, the more you know about them, the better chance you have of reaching them and making a lasting connection.
If you aren’t sure how to answer these questions about your target audience, start by asking your team, and then ask your audience directly. Talk to your current customers and learn as much as you can about what they think and feel. The more you know about your target audience, the better chance you have at reaching them.
