“Stranger Things” Uses Out of Home Advertising to Build Their Brand
I was in Los Angeles last week and was reminded of how much I love the advertising on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood. It’s LA’s version of Times Square, and when done well, it is awesome.
Netflix took full advantage of the opportunity to use the boards and buildings to promote the 3rd season of Stranger Things. There were the typical ads for the show.

But what really got my attention was the awesome use of the billboards and other installations as if the viewer were actually in Hawkins.

And the best part was setting up building installations under the outdoor boards.

High visibility, great impressions, lots of earned media, and a powerful way to promote the show and announce the launch of the new season. Excellent way to build the brand.
This is what I love about great advertising campaigns. Getting attention and changing the conversation. Breaking through the clutter and building a brand can be tough, but when it’s done well, it can be really awesome.
You might not have a Netflix-level budget and your business might not be as appealing as a top tv show, but you have to ask yourself how you can create an opportunity to promote your products and services in a different way.
It’s about being different and willing to stand out from the crowd. This is hard and scary, but the rewards are great. Look for opportunities to be brave with your brand.
