Branding Lessons from “The Bear” – Part 2
By Michael J. Russo, CCO brandRUSSO
“Quality comes from Quantity” — a mantra I’ve carried through every phase of my career. As I reflect on one of my favorite episodes from the TV show “The Bear,” I’m struck by the profound lessons it offers, particularly in the context of branding and corporate culture. While the most recent season of “The Bear” was just released on FX, the episode that really hit home for me was from season 2, entitled “Forks”. It chronicles Richie’s week-long stint working at one of the world’s best restaurants and is a treasure trove of insights that resonate deeply with the principles we uphold at brandRUSSO.
Side note: If you haven’t been watching “The Bear”, or viewed this episode, you should. But in case you missed it, here is a clip from the “Forks” episode to catch you up.
The Value of Humble Beginnings
Richie’s initial task of shining forks may seem mundane, yet it’s a powerful reminder that no task is too small when it contributes to a larger purpose. This aligns with our belief that every detail matters. In branding, it’s the small, consistent actions that build a strong and authentic brand. Just as Richie learns to appreciate the importance of spotless forks, we emphasize meticulous care in every aspect of our branding efforts, ensuring that every touchpoint is polished and reflects the brand’s promise.
Embracing the Grind
Richie’s transformation over the week underscores the importance of perseverance and dedication. At first, he views his tasks as a punishment, but gradually, he realizes the value and pride in his work. This mirrors the journey many brands undergo. Building a strong brand isn’t an overnight process; it requires relentless effort and a commitment to quality. At brandRUSSO, we champion the grind because we know that enduring success comes from persistent effort and attention to detail.
The Power of Service
One of the most touching moments in the episode is Garrett’s reflection on service, which he sees as a form of hospitality akin to caring for someone at the highest level. This perspective is central to our approach. We believe that serving our clients with the highest level of dedication and respect not only meets their needs but also fosters lasting relationships. Just as the restaurant staff in “The Bear” takes pride in making every guest’s experience exceptional, we strive to exceed our client’s expectations through exceptional service and strategic insights.
Attention to Detail
Chef Terry’s focus on small details, like peeling mushrooms to show diners the time spent on their dish, is a lesson in authenticity and care. But the scene below puts a strong exclamation point on what it means to be accountable. This aligns with our Razor Branding™ process, where we delve deep into understanding every nuance of our client’s brands (but with far less yelling and four-letter words). By paying attention to the finer details, we create authentic and compelling brand stories that resonate with their audiences. It’s this commitment to detail that sets great brands apart from good ones.
Learning and Adaptability
Throughout the episode, Richie’s willingness to learn and adapt is evident. This adaptability is crucial in branding. The market is constantly evolving, and brands must be willing to learn and pivot. At brandRUSSO, we encourage a culture of continuous learning and adaptability, ensuring that our strategies remain relevant and effective in an ever-changing landscape.
Every Second Counts
The recurring theme of “Every second counts” poignantly reminds us of the value of time and the impact of every action. In branding, every interaction, no matter how small, contributes to the overall perception of the brand. By making every second count, we ensure that our efforts lead to meaningful and impactful brand experiences.
The episode “Forks” from “The Bear” beautifully encapsulates many of the principles we hold dear at brandRUSSO. From the value of humble beginnings to the power of service, attention to detail, and the importance of adaptability, these lessons are integral to building strong, authentic brands. As we continue to navigate the world of branding, let’s remember to make every second count and embrace the journey with perseverance and dedication.
